Orthopedic nursing expert witness

Med League’s, an orthopedic nursing expert witness, testified in a case that brought in the largest negligence verdict in the history of the State of Rhode Island. The case involved defendant Providence Hospital, two nurses, and seven doctors.

Plaintiff Carl Beauchamp sustained a head injury which left him with permanent, debilitating injuries included cognitive difficulty, speech and motor impairments. He is confined to a wheelchair and needs permanent care. He alleged that the staff failed to assess him, communicate with other staff about his condition, and missed signs that he was worsening.

The hospital conceded liability. The jurors were asked to award damages only. On 4/29/15, they gave Beauchamp $15 million for pain and suffering, $5.6 million for medical and expenses, and an award of $5 million to Mr. Beauchamp’s wife. The judge awarded interest of $5.9 million, bringing the total award to $31.5 million. The hospital’s parent company did not plan to appeal the award and expressed its sorrow and regret.

Med League did not participate in this case but provided orthopedic nursing expert services.
