Patricia
Iyer presented at prestigious ICN conference.
Patricia
Iyer MSN RN LNCC (center in the photo) was
accepted as co-presenter of two symposia at the International
Council of Nurses conference held on May 27-June 1 in
Yokohama, Japan. The ICN 2007 International Conference highlighted
the realities of nursing practice and acknowledge nurses’
expertise in dealing with the unexpected. Nurses and nursing
are constantly faced with the challenge of change and unpredictable
events. Complex work situations, rapidly shifting health
priorities and powerful external socio-economic factors
require nurses to apply creative and effective problem-solving
skills on a daily basis. Nurses’ proactive and reactive
solutions are grounded by in-depth professional knowledge
and ethical principles.
Along
with Barbara Levin BSN RN ONC ONCC and Mary Ann Shea JD
RN, Patricia presented two symposia. The first addressed
non-traditional methods
of educating nurses about how to handle unexpected healthcare
crises. The second presented a case
study of a woman injured by medical malpractice. This
program utilized a case study where the breakdown in communication
resulted in a sentinel event and cardiac arrest. This extraordinary
program affected every attendee. Medical records, photos,
and videos detailed this unexpected and near fatal event.
This session also focused on the root/cause analysis and
the new programs designed/implemented in the facility as
the lessons were learned. Topics discussed in this program
included communication – telephone and verbal orders,
reporting of critical lab values, patient advocacy and chain
of command. The audience learned what an institution did
to incorporate new policies and procedures and an education
program to safeguard lives.
